For our attorneys at Indianapolis injury law firm Poynter & Bucheri, LLC (PBAR), handling complex lawsuits with catastrophic injuries, including boating accidents, is something we do well. Our clients can seek compensation for their losses. While Indiana is not a water-centric state and there are fewer Hoosiers who know that the state has 86 named lakes (without accounting for its massive resources), the watercraft laws are enforced to protect people and property. All of Indiana’s lakes and rivers offer some boating opportunities, even the White River in Indianapolis. Indiana’s level terrain and natural drainage make it possible to have many navigable rivers and lakes. Boating is enjoyable, but it also presents risks. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) reported that 4,291 boating accidents led to 658 deaths and 2,629 injuries in 2017. Compared to 2016, boating accidents fell in the United States in 2017, but Indiana saw an increase in incidents from 40 to 57, and there were more fatalities.
