Garner Narrative is a place that celebrates art that embraces generative chaos and political content. It is a term I have developed to refer to the way I make and think about art. These characteristics are the hallmarks of an engaged studio practice in which I define my personal truth through artmaking. Contemporary narrative art, particularly when it finds generous viewers, is an antipathy to what is linear or fixed. There are always multiple currents streaming through and connecting many solar systems. This idea is why I make art. Art can teach us to see the ways that these forces – time, place, ideas, people, objects, and materials – coalesce with serendipity and intention. I am the result of this time, place, ideas, people, objects, and materials. I am the son of Joyce Garner, another artist who also is a second-generation artist. I studied sculpture with Tom Bills at Brandeis University as well as painting at Indiana University Southeast with Debra Clem. All of my large drawings are about the same size – almost like a deck of cards. This is why I call them Cosmic Tarot. They can be used as a guide. Draw one of my large drawings to find your past, a second to understand your present and a third to reveal your future. This is the truth of my artist statement. Another truth: I love animals and drawing them is the most fun ever.
