The Department of Art + Design was founded in 1937 by the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Louisville. In 1946, the Department gained permanent status when it was renamed the Hite Art Institute due to a bequest by Allen R. Hite and Marcia S. Hite. The Department of Art + Design changed its name to the Hite Institute of Art + Design in 2022. The Institute houses 16 faculty members, four full-time staff, approximately 400 students and graduates combined with art history and curatorial studies, and four full-time staff. The Hite Institute of Art + Design has a studio art program that is spread across four buildings. Schneider Hall, located west of the main Belknap Campus, houses various programs in studio arts, including studios for foundation design, foundation drawing and painting (101), and ceramics (103). The HPES/Studio Arts Building, a warehouse in the Cardinal Blvd. alley, houses sculpture and ceramics. The Hite’s glass program is located at the Cressman Center for Visual Art downtown. The Master of Fine Arts program is located at 1606 Rowan Street, a multi-use building leased by the University of Louisville. Lutz Hall, on Belknap Campus on a Triangle Area lot, houses the Art History Program, the Visual Resources Center, and the Print Collection.
