In 1978, the Arthur Roger Gallery opened at 3005 Magazine Street in New Orleans' Garden District. The Contemporary Arts Center, located in downtown New Orleans, opened a year before the gallery, and this would occur as the city's art scene underwent significant expansion. A pivotal venue in New Orleans, the gallery was Arthur Roger’s inaugural gallery and collected many of the most important New Orleans artists, including Robert Gordy (Ida Kohlmeyer). Three years later, Arthur Roger helped create the New Orleans Gallery Association, which is now known as the Arts District. Next, he started an annual coordinated opening—the city's most popular event in October—for the Saturday following Art for Art's Sake, which would change the New Orleans art world. Subsequently, the gallery was chosen by prominent interior designers to help them assemble several large corporate collections. Those designers would include Angelo Donghia for the InterContinental New Orleans Hotel and Skidmore Owings & Merrill for the Pan-American Life Insurance Co.
