George Rodrigue was born and grew up in Cajun country, Louisiana, U.S.A. He painted his fear of his heritage (including its people, land, customs, and mythology) vanishing from the earth. He frequently stated that he wanted to "graphically represent the Cajun culture" to safeguard it from a modern world. Rodrigue began his art studies at the Art Center College of Design and later at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
