Hilton's Tent City was founded by Irving Liss in Scollay Square, Boston, in 1947 under the name Hilton's War Surplus. The first Tent City site was taken by the City of Boston for Government Center construction. In the early 1960s, Irv Liss moved the business to its long-time Friend Street address. The store was crammed from basement to attic with anything relating to the outdoors. Irv would buy truckloads of tents. He made Hilton's Tent City the venue for gear bargains. Irv would be found at Tent City six days a week, from opening to closing time. He was always at his desk poring over ledgers and invoices, with a cigar unlit in his mouth. He worked there until he was 88 years old. Irv went to the Great Campground in the Sky in 2010.
