About this business

The Massachusetts Normal Art School originated from the Massachusetts Drawing Act (1870) and became a normal school in 1873. "Normal schools" are the predecessors of teachers' colleges. In the mid-19th century, Bostonians recognized that the Industrial Revolution had changed the world and that America could be built by other means. This required art instruction, which was believed to be necessary for a strong nation and economy and would also help its people. London and Paris were magnificent capital cities with extensive museums and galleries, examples of thriving. MassArt is founded on the belief that art is an inciting force for a positive change. Because of our history, we have been able to provide a light gate on world-class education to everyone. Our work is not tied to financial and social advantages. Our passion is to provide an education that will enable the goals of a new future, based on ambition, talent, and drive. We are proud to be the US's first self-sufficient, visually oriented public college.
