Dick was enraged by the owner's comment, and he left his job that day. Dick drove to his grandmother's house, where he spent a lot of time as a child and told his grandmother what happened. Dick's grandma asked him how much it would cost to start his store. Dick responded by estimating that he would need $300. To gather the money, Dick's grandmother retrieved $300 from her cookie jar where she stored her savings. DICK's expanded its offerings in the 1970s, including much of the stuff found at DICK's Sporting Goods today.
