This calculator uses the multiplier method, the starting point most insurance adjusters and personal injury lawyers use. It adds your financial losses (medical bills and lost wages) to a pain-and-suffering figure, which is those losses multiplied by a factor set by how serious the injury is: 1.5 to 2 times for minor injuries, up to 4 to 5 times for catastrophic ones. The type of accident adjusts the result, and it is then reduced by your share of fault under Michigan law. In Michigan, a no-fault state, it also separates what your own PIP insurance pays from what you can claim from the other driver.
Michigan is a no-fault state. After a car accident, your own personal injury protection (PIP) covers your medical bills with no dollar cap by default, whoever caused the crash.
You can claim pain and suffering from the at-fault driver only if your injury meets Michigan's serious-injury threshold: a serious impairment of a body function, permanent serious disfigurement, or death. Financial losses above your PIP limit can still be claimed.
Michigan drivers can choose a lower PIP limit when they buy coverage; unlimited medical coverage is the default if no choice was made.
Motorcycle riders are generally outside PIP and follow the ordinary fault rules. Choose Motorcycle Accident in the calculator above to see that estimate.
