Nebraska Solar and Wind Power to do our PV panel grid tie connections. Prior to finding them we posted ads and connected with contractors sending out pictures, one-line drawings, and equipment lists only to find none of them were interested in performing the grid-tie connections. I searched for solar installers and Nebraska Solar and Wind Power came up. When I called the owner answered, I explained my situation and he agreed to do the connections before I sent him pics and schematics. He came out a few days after I was ready, gave me a quote, and started the work the following week. He then scheduled the city permit inspection for the week after that. I was quite surprised by how affordable it was considering the work needed to be performed, including a new sub-panel. My wife was working from home when he was doing his work and appreciated his courtesy and professionalism.

How this Omaha solar cost calculator works

This calculator sizes a solar system from your electricity use. Your monthly bill, divided by the average Nebraska electricity price, gives your yearly use; Nebraska's sunshine (1,423 kWh per kW of panels a year) then gives the system size that covers it, adjusted for roof direction and shade. The installed price is that size multiplied by the price per watt homeowners in Nebraska pay installers. Payback compares that price with what the panels save at Nebraska power prices, assuming prices rise 3% a year.

Nebraska numbers this calculator uses

Installed price
$2.46–$3.33 per watt in Nebraska (typical $2.90), before rebates. A typical 6 kW home system costs $14,800–$20,000.
Sunshine
1,423 kWh of electricity per kW of panels a year in Nebraska.
Electricity price
About 12.9¢ per kWh, the average residential price in Nebraska.
Selling power back
Power you send to the grid earns less than the price you pay for it (net billing or avoided-cost credits), so using your solar power at home is worth more.
Rebates and tax credits
The 30% federal tax credit for buying solar ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. Leases and power purchase agreements can still carry a federal credit through the installer for systems in service by the end of 2027.

An estimate, not a quote. Roof size and pitch, shading, equipment, permits and the installer all change the final price; installers confirm it after a site visit. Frequently asked questions

7 questions
How many solar panels do I need for my home?
The number of panels depends on your energy use, roof direction, and shading. Our calculator estimates system size based on these factors.
Are solar panels worth it in Nebraska?
With electricity at 12.9 cents per kWh, solar can reduce bills. Payback varies, but using solar power at home is more valuable than selling it back.
What is the payback time for solar panels in Nebraska?
Payback depends on system cost, energy use, and incentives. Our calculator provides an estimate based on these factors.
Do solar panels work on all roof types?
South-facing roofs are best. East or west roofs need 15% more panels. North-facing roofs are usually not viable. Shade reduces output significantly.
Can I sell excess solar power back to the grid in Omaha?
Yes, but power sent to the grid earns less than what you pay for it. Using solar power at home is more cost-effective.
Are there any solar tax credits in Nebraska for 2026?
The 30% federal tax credit ended for systems installed after 2025. Leases and PPAs may still carry a credit through 2027.
How does charging an electric car affect solar needs?
Each electric car adds about 2,700 kWh a year of electricity use. Our calculator includes this in its solar system size estimate.
