Born in Daegu, Korea, Kyundong Kwak studied ballet at Universal Ballet Company and continued his training in Washington D.C. at the Kirov Ballet School. He won the silver medal in the Dong-Ah Ballet Competition in 1992 and performed in 1993 in the Kirov Ballet as the first Asian Blue Bird. Kyudong Kwak joined the Seoul Ballet Theatre as a principal dancer after working for eight years with the Universal Ballet Company. In 1998, he began his ballet career as a dancer before taking on the role of ballet master at Nevada Ballet Theatre. Kyudong Kwak has also taught at Dixie State University's dance department.
