Trees New York Trees New York is a community tree planter, stewardship project and educator. Over 40 years we have empowered communities with the knowledge and tools needed to plant trees and care for the urban forest. Trees New York has trained more than 13,500 Citizen Pruners and engaged over 9,000 young people in tree care, stewardship and maintenance. Street tree stewardship is crucial to the life of New York City. The City’s overall budget is short, but it prioritizes tree care. We have planted over 5,000 trees in the last decade in underserved communities, including on New York City Housing Authority campus playgrounds and community gardens. All street trees—big or small, young or old, or in poor shape—make the city healthier for all New Yorkers. The environment benefits more from mature trees. A mature tree removes nearly 70 times more pollution from the air than a newly planted tree. Unfortunately, New York City street trees do not always grow old. Soil compaction, deicing agents, pollution, and dog waste threaten your tree. Our programs change the tree for the better. We also make a well-trained, educated, and dedicated volunteer corps that is equipped to improve the city’s urban environment. Trees New York offers ongoing guidance and support to our volunteers.
