How this Cleveland solar cost calculator works

This calculator sizes a solar system from your electricity use. Your monthly bill, divided by the average Ohio electricity price, gives your yearly use; Ohio's sunshine (1,296 kWh per kW of panels a year) then gives the system size that covers it, adjusted for roof direction and shade. The installed price is that size multiplied by the price per watt homeowners in Ohio pay installers. Payback compares that price with what the panels save at Ohio power prices, assuming prices rise 3% a year.

Ohio numbers this calculator uses

Installed price
$2.20–$2.98 per watt in Ohio (typical $2.59), before rebates. A typical 6 kW home system costs $13,200–$17,900.
Sunshine
1,296 kWh of electricity per kW of panels a year in Ohio.
Electricity price
About 18.7¢ per kWh, the average residential price in Ohio.
Selling power back
Power you send to the grid earns less than the price you pay for it (net billing or avoided-cost credits), so using your solar power at home is worth more.
Rebates and tax credits
The 30% federal tax credit for buying solar ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. Leases and power purchase agreements can still carry a federal credit through the installer for systems in service by the end of 2027.

An estimate, not a quote. Roof size and pitch, shading, equipment, permits and the installer all change the final price; installers confirm it after a site visit. Frequently asked questions

7 questions
Are solar panels worth it in Ohio?
With Ohio's electricity price at 18.7 cents per kWh, solar panels can reduce bills significantly. Using solar power at home is more valuable than selling it back.
How many solar panels do I need for my home?
The number of panels depends on your energy use, roof direction, and shading. South-facing roofs need fewer panels; east or west need about 15% more.
What is the payback period for solar in Ohio?
The payback period varies based on system cost, energy use, and electricity prices. Ohio's average electricity price can lead to substantial savings over time.
Can I sell power back to the grid in Ohio?
Yes, but the power you send to the grid earns less than the price you pay for it, making home use of solar power more valuable.
Are there any solar rebates or tax credits in Ohio for 2026?
The 30% federal tax credit ended for systems installed after 2025. Leases and PPAs may still carry a federal credit if in service by 2027.
How does roof direction affect solar panel efficiency?
South-facing roofs are optimal, needing fewer panels. East or west roofs require about 15% more panels. North-facing roofs are usually not recommended.
Does charging an electric car at home affect solar needs?
Yes, each electric car adds roughly 2,700 kWh a year of electricity use, impacting the size of the solar system needed.
