Artists Studios and Co-Op Working Space Crane Arts offers five studio floors with galleries on the ground floor. Monthly rents range from $350 to $2,500, with many units having separate utility bills. Square footage runs from 150 to 2,000. The Crane Company Building is a cast concrete structure with a brick front. It was built in 1905 in the warehouse area of Kensington and the manufacturing area just north of Girard Avenue. Walter Ballinger, a Philadelphia construction innovator, designed it using concrete construction techniques. The long, wedge-shaped building was originally a plumbing supply storage and distribution hub. A three-story stable for draft horses and delivery vehicles abutted the building. Many years later, it was used as a frozen seafood processing plant. The Icebox Project Space is now located inside. Combining Space, Creativity, and Community Crane Arts is a community that supports and promotes the production of art by advanced and emerging artists. We further Philadelphia’s creative, economic, and cultural resources. Our mission is to offer a place where creativity-based businesses can develop and breed. We have a range of unique spaces that allow performing and visual artists to display events on a regional, national, or local level.
