The post-Civil War era saw Joseph B. Heiskell migrate his law firm from Madisonville, Tennessee, to Memphis. He named it Heiskell and White. The firm underwent significant changes over the next 100 years due to numerous local mergers and combinations. One catalyst came in 1964 when the firm merged with Donelson Adams, founded by Lewis Donelson III and Ben C. Adams. This evolutionary stage, built upon in 1994 when the firm merged with Baker Worthington, saw the establishment of the combined entity's offices in Knoxville, Nashville, Johnson City, and Washington, D.C. The merger also brought in former U.S. Senator Howard H. Baker, Jr. and Robert F. Worthington.
