When Sunshine City did a calculation of how much we would use and how many panels we would need they came within $100. We were told that you won’t have an electric bill except for the meter fee at the most $30. When by chance the panels produce more than you use El Paso Electric buys back the power and that would reduce the $30 to much less. The solar panels were on for a couple of weeks, and we received a bill for June was over $400.00. The bill we received in July was for $245.00 and Sunshine Solar compensated us $200.00 which was appreciated. We received a bill for August $202.00 and a bill for September for $206.73. We have been going over the $30.00 for the last four months. We have a total of 28 panels (which we increased from the original 14 panels) on our roof at 400 watts a panel you would think with that number of panels that it would be a lot but it’s not enough. We still have an electric bill that’s $200 or more every month on top of the $208 that we’re paying for solar panels. Simple math – that is still over $400 a month. There’s something wrong with this picture. We have inquired with our neighbors that live around us with comparable square footage and do not have solar and their electric bill was anywhere from $100-$165 a month in the hottest part of the Summer. Additionally, unless you get batteries (an additional $15,000.00) to store the excess power produced during the day that you don’t use instead of sending it back to El Paso Electric it’s not going to do you any good. The excess is purchased from you at a reduced rate and what you use is sold back to you at a higher rate. Furthermore, you will not have solar when the power is out and if it is a cloudy day your energy produced by solar will be reduced. In total I spent $20,000 on an AC unit and furnace when they replace the new furnace and AC and $48,000 for solar panels. If you are still considering solar, I would recommend getting your insulation checked in your attic your vents going through the attic to their rooms and check your AC unit and make sure it’s not a single speed motor. Solar will probably work only if you have perfect conditions. If you have a swimming pool, make sure you have a variable speed motor, because single speed motors draws more amps, and we’re finding all the stuff out as we go along after we got the solar installed. Furthermore, the tax credit that Sam used to entice us to purchase solar is not available to us because we are retired and therefore, we are not eligible for the $14,000 tax credit. Buyers beware of the solar scam and false promises that you will never see. I would not recommend going to Solar because the solar companies will tell you what you want to hear to get you to buy their product. Don’t believe everything you are told unless they are willing to put it in writing. To add insult to injury if they send you a piece of equipment to fix something that is faulty on the equipment, and they will charge you a service fee of $250.00. The nightmare goes on.
