The Gage Academy of Art would also like to pay tribute to the Coast Salish Peoples, the land's first settlers and those of the adjacent Hoh River, Hood Canal, Duwamish River, and all other bass watersheds linking to Puget Sound. Gage is an unceded territory. Many Indigenous peoples still live on this land. Part of their entrance might be a privilege, but they must remember that without the Coast Salish tribes' help and this land, they would have no access to it. The Coast Salish Peoples still have sovereignty, self-governance, culture, and way of life. This land has always been sacred to the Indigenous Peoples. King County and the greater Washington community have committed to studying, learning from, and reconciling the painful history of relations between Native and non-Native peoples, the beginning of this work must include honesty, respect, and understanding that Native Peoples' lived experiences, including forced exiles, practices of dispossession, genocide, and assimilation, must be acknowledged. Artists can be made, not born. Gage engages the community by teaching visual arts. Gage offers instruction in drawing, painting, and sculpture.
