K-3 Campus Students in grades K-3 attend the Mount Baker K-3 Campus, which is close to the main campus. It has two classrooms, and there are about 24 students, coupled with two full-time teachers in each class. About half of the seats in the K-3 classrooms are reserved for preschool students who are moving up to the school's first-grade program. Hence, the number of new kindergarteners in the K-3 Campus is approximately equal to the number entering first and second grades each year. This transition is a way to gently introduce students to grade school in preparation for the first grade. At the beginning of their kindergarten year, students do not make hard choices such as which math problems to solve. This allows them to become acclimated to the idea that they can find multiple ways to explore their potential. The kindergarten teachers then ease up on this choice structure as the year progresses, helping kids assume more independence and responsibility for their learning. Another aspect that makes this campus appealing is that the staff takes the time to choose books and tools aligned with the Waldorf philosophy. This means students have the luxury of learning more about what makes them tick—not only academically, but also when it comes to the world around them. 6-8 Campus
