Leptospirosis can be transmitted to both dogs and humans that come into contact with water contaminated with the urine of an infected animal. The disease is most common in dogs that drink water from puddles or creeks. Symptoms of Leptospirosis include fever and muscle aches. However, the disease can quickly become anemia or kidney disease. Giardia is spread through ingesting infected animal feces or water. It most commonly infects animals with severe diarrhea. A simple test on a stool sample can diagnose Giardia. Generally, Giardia cysts persist. Make sure to wash your pet's bedding and bathe them. Giardia re-infection can be prevented by making sure your pet doesn't eat their feces. Fleas are a common concern for Northwest pet owners. Many Northwest pets experience flea allergies. Tapeworms, which are transmitted by fleas, are a major concern. Flea prevention is recommended for all pets. The veterinarian can tell you about flea products that are appropriate for your pet. Avoid using flea collars or flea dips.
