At seven years old, his first exhibition was in the local library. Gary began carving and sculpting birds from wood at the age of 14. His only tool was a pocketknife. Gary began carving in 1987, when he realized how much he loved wildfowl. His vivid images from nature combined with an artistic sensibility, detailed detail and realist ability allowed him to make sculptures that are now on display worldwide. Over the years, he has been awarded numerous Best of Show awards throughout the United States. Seven times he has been awarded the Best in World title in Masters Class 22 1st Best of Show. In addition, he was presented with the Peoples Choice Award in Ward World Wildfowl Carving Championships in February, 2013, 2013 and 2019. He has also been a 16-time Gulf South Champion in Miniature and won the Decorative Life size purchase award sponsored by ConocoPhillips Petroleum in 2003, 2005, and 2011.
