I am very pleased with the outcome of my case, everything was explained and even with my limited computer skills Halley and Livia navigated me thru this complicated process. I received a settlement that was fair. I had a unique situation with 15 years of service and a 11 month lay off in the middle…

A very professional law firm yet you are treated with compassion and a sincere desire to look after your interests. In my case the process took 5 years but well worth the time and effort. How this Calgary long-term disability calculator works

This calculator adds two numbers. Back pay is the monthly benefit your policy should have paid (after any CPP-D offset) multiplied by the months it has been unpaid. Future benefits are the same monthly amount until benefits normally end at age 65, converted to today's value with a discount rate. Insurers rarely pay the full future value in a lump sum, so the estimate also shows the range buyouts typically land in, which depends on whether you are still being paid, were cut off, or were denied from the start.

Alberta rules this calculator applies

Deadline to act
Generally 2 years from discovery (Limitations Act), which the Court of Appeal has run from the first notice that benefits were ending (Halter v. Standard Life, 2014 ABCA 57). Many policies set a shorter contractual period.
Discount rate
Future benefits are discounted at 3%, a common buyout assumption (Alberta has no court-set rate).
Typical buyout range
Published lump-sum settlements land at about 50–75% of the present value of future benefits when the claim is being paid, 40–70% after benefits are cut off, and 30–60% when the claim was denied from the start. Back pay is added on top.
CPP-D offset
Most group policies reduce your LTD benefit by any CPP Disability you receive (about $1,236 a month on average in 2026).
Tax
If your employer paid any part of the premiums, monthly LTD benefits are taxable. In a lump-sum settlement of a denied claim, the back-pay portion is usually taxable and the future portion often is not, so how the settlement is split matters. Get tax advice before you sign.
Extra damages
Canadian courts can add damages for mental distress caused by a wrongful denial (Fidler v. Sun Life, 2006 SCC 30) and, rarely, punitive damages for bad faith (Whiten v. Pilot, 2002 SCC 18). These are seldom part of a settlement and are not in this estimate.

General information about Alberta disability insurance law, not legal or tax advice. The estimate is not a guarantee: your policy wording, medical evidence, offsets and the insurer's position all change the answer. A disability lawyer can tell you how these rules apply to you.

Frequently asked questions

9 questions
How does the Calgary long-term disability settlement calculator work?
The calculator estimates back pay, future benefits to age 65, their present value, and a typical lump-sum settlement range based on your claim status, policy details, and other factors.
What is a long-term disability buyout?
A buyout is a lump-sum payment to settle future LTD benefits. It usually ranges from 30-75% of the present value of future benefits, depending on your claim status.
Why are LTD settlements below full value?
Lump-sum settlements are typically lower to account for the present value of future payments and potential risks. They range from 30-75% of future benefits' value.
What happens if my long-term disability claim is denied in Alberta?
If denied, you can dispute the decision. Alberta's general deadline to start legal action is 2 years from notice of benefits ending, but your policy may set a shorter period.
Is a lump-sum LTD settlement taxable in Alberta?
If your employer paid part of the premiums, monthly benefits are taxable. In a denied claim settlement, back pay is usually taxable, but future benefits often are not.
What is the difference between own-occupation and any-occupation tests?
Most LTD policies switch from an 'own occupation' to an 'any occupation' test after 24 months, affecting eligibility for continued benefits.
How accurate is the LTD settlement estimate for Calgary?
The estimate is based on typical ranges and assumptions like a 3% discount rate. It provides a general guideline, not a guarantee.
How is back pay calculated in an LTD settlement?
Back pay includes unpaid benefits from the date they were cut off or denied until settlement. It is added to the lump-sum settlement offer.
What is the deadline for disputing a denied LTD claim in Alberta?
In Alberta, the general deadline is 2 years from when you first receive notice that benefits are ending, but your policy may have a shorter period.
