Classic Landscapes was created in March 1980. The first job I was offered was a house in St. Albert. I can remember it vividly, and I can still drive there today. After the final exams were over, my university roommate, who had no plan for the future, offered to assist me. I had two loads of topsoil dumped in the front yard, and for the next few days, we worked on it using a wheelbarrow and shovels. That first project marked the beginning of the company. It was a symbol of faith, a simple investment that needed co-signing by my father. Then came the pickup truck. My younger brother Bob joined me in the summer, and he is still here today. As I type this, I know he is with a Bobcat machine out there working on some other project for our garden centre. There are some projects that I can't trust anyone to do. It has been a pattern we have maintained for the past years. Bob shows up and helps me with any problem I might have.
I needed the landscaping job to help me earn some money to pay my bills. It was a result of a summer job in a Calgary garden centre. At the centre, I saw how I could make a home look more beautiful with plants. The first day I laid sod for $1 was one of the best days I had then. It seems so long ago. I can still remember vividly how things were then. Life has changed so much.
