How this Abbotsford long-term disability calculator works

This calculator adds two numbers. Back pay is the monthly benefit your policy should have paid (after any CPP-D offset) multiplied by the months it has been unpaid. Future benefits are the same monthly amount until benefits normally end at age 65, converted to today's value with a discount rate. Insurers rarely pay the full future value in a lump sum, so the estimate also shows the range buyouts typically land in, which depends on whether you are still being paid, were cut off, or were denied from the start.

British Columbia rules this calculator applies

Deadline to act
Generally 2 years from when you knew or should have known you had a claim, usually when benefits were denied or stopped (Limitation Act). Your policy may set its own terms, so act early.
Discount rate
Future benefits are discounted at 1.5%, the rate BC courts use for future earnings (Law and Equity Regulation).
Typical buyout range
Published lump-sum settlements land at about 50–75% of the present value of future benefits when the claim is being paid, 40–70% after benefits are cut off, and 30–60% when the claim was denied from the start. Back pay is added on top.
CPP-D offset
Most group policies reduce your LTD benefit by any CPP Disability you receive (about $1,236 a month on average in 2026).
Tax
If your employer paid any part of the premiums, monthly LTD benefits are taxable. In a lump-sum settlement of a denied claim, the back-pay portion is usually taxable and the future portion often is not, so how the settlement is split matters. Get tax advice before you sign.
Extra damages
Canadian courts can add damages for mental distress caused by a wrongful denial (Fidler v. Sun Life, 2006 SCC 30) and, rarely, punitive damages for bad faith (Whiten v. Pilot, 2002 SCC 18). These are seldom part of a settlement and are not in this estimate.

General information about British Columbia disability insurance law, not legal or tax advice. The estimate is not a guarantee: your policy wording, medical evidence, offsets and the insurer's position all change the answer. A disability lawyer can tell you how these rules apply to you.

Frequently asked questions

9 questions
How does the long-term disability settlement calculator work?
The calculator estimates back pay owed, future benefits to age 65, their present value, and a typical lump-sum settlement range based on your claim details.
How accurate is the LTD settlement calculator?
The calculator provides estimates based on typical ranges and assumptions. Actual settlements can vary. It's a starting point, not a guarantee.
What is a long-term disability buyout?
A buyout is a lump-sum settlement offer to resolve your LTD claim. It typically ranges from 30-75% of the present value of future benefits.
Why are LTD settlements below full value?
Settlements account for uncertainties and the time value of money. They often range from 30-75% of future benefits' present value.
What is the deadline for LTD claims in British Columbia?
Generally, you have 2 years from when you knew or should have known about your claim. Check your policy for specific terms.
How does CPP-D affect my LTD benefits?
Most LTD policies reduce benefits by any CPP Disability received. This offset affects the calculation of back pay and future benefits.
Is a lump-sum LTD settlement taxable in Abbotsford?
If your employer paid any premiums, monthly benefits are taxable. In a denied claim settlement, back pay is usually taxable, future portions often are not.
What is the 'own occupation' vs 'any occupation' test?
Most LTD policies switch from 'own occupation' to 'any occupation' after 24 months, affecting eligibility for continued benefits.
What if my LTD claim is denied in British Columbia?
Use the calculator to estimate potential back pay and settlement. Consider consulting a professional for advice specific to your situation.
