Pain following the placement of braces should be anticipated, and it will not be permanent. Many patients ask what they can do to help alleviate the pain. Mix one teaspoon of sea salt and eight ounces of lukewarm water together to make it taste good. Gargle and swirl this mixture around your mouth for a few minutes, but do not swallow it. Pain relievers can be helpful if rinsing does not work. If the irritation continues for a few weeks, it may be around your lips and mouth. Wax can be used to relieve irritation.
