Most people who are addicted do not stick with their first attempt at recovery. Recovery from addiction or alcoholism occurs in a series of ups and downs after the client leaves the treatment facility used to develop new coping mechanisms when bad things happen. One of the things that can cause a client to relapse is their failure to deal with past sources of anger, stress, and other negative emotions . They did not get stressed out by anyone causing these issues in the treatment center. The stressors don't show up until the person is actually living their normal life again. During recovery coaching, we teach clients many ways to defuse and solve problems as they arise. This is done before they lash out in anger or stress where they no longer feel that they need to self medicate. We end the cycle of addiction and relapse during the recovery coaching sessions. Recovery is long and often has obstacles that are often more the clients' fault than their family, but they can still be obstacles. The relapse process often comes from the client's past. Recovery coaching helps clients deal with and change these things in their lives to prevent the relapse cycle. As a recovery coach, I teach clients to understand what led them to this point in their lives. Let's face it, most treatment centers have what is called "treatment center disease." This is when a client picks a fight with their girlfriend, a spouse, another client, or some other form of loved in their life. The client has started to go through the program and the staff has given that person some comfort, or the family member that can see the person doesn't appear to be in pain, suffering, or shaking to make them upset. In most cases, the client is instructed to leave and not come back. Most of the time, the client does come back. Most of the time, the client has passive-aggressively said, "I am not addicted, but I have another issue that is not an addiction, unless you call it that.
