At the age of 7, Stephen Roberts, a young man from the neighborhood, started his occupation as a rug cleaner. At the beginning of the year, Gordon Roberts, Steve's father, had revamped their family home and taken on a gold shag rug carpet. Mr. Roberts noticed that the shag carpet was over a year old and resolved to clean it. With a soapy pail, a brush, and sandpaper, he began the task. After the boy consistently begged to help, he gave in. Steve felt happy with the cleaning results. However, his elation was short-lived. The boy was surprised to find the rug monotonous a week later, and soap residue had stained it. These frustrations bore a fruit of a search for the perfect way to clean a rug. A few days later, Mr. Roberts found an advert in the magazine about a rug cleaning machine. This event marked the beginning of the employed family enterprise (farewell to shaggy gold-colored carpet).
