Alona was born in the Philippines and migrated to Canada on February 22, 1975. She grew up in Winnipeg, attending public schools in the Seven Oaks School Division. Alona graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree in Political Studies from the University of Manitoba (1994) and a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Ottawa (1998). She became a member of the Manitoba Bar in 1999 and the Ontario Bar in 2003. Alona spent a couple of years articling and practicing with a prominent Winnipeg law firm before returning to Ottawa in 2001. She worked as a Policy Advisor to the Senior Federal Cabinet Minister for Manitoba several years before joining a mid-sized Winnipeg law firm in January 2005, where she practiced until November 2015. Alona, in collaboration with Yenny Trinh, began serving clients in their newly established law firm, Mercado Trinh Law LLP, on November 30, 2015. Alona has served on many community boards and committees. She helped establish the Maples Youth Justice Committee as a Founding and Executive Board member. She also served on the Boards of Hospice and Palliative Care Manitoba, Seven Oaks Education Foundation, and Immigrant Centre of Manitoba Inc. Additionally, she served as a member of the Standing Committee on Governance and Policy for St. Edward’s School Inc. and was the Past Chair of the Legal Committee of the Philippine Centre of Manitoba (PCCM).
