Kara's Urban Day Spa

At last! As a new mom I finally found some time for a little self-care after 5 months postpartum. As a dishevelled new mom, I was beyond excited to get my highlights freshened up just in time for the holidays, and maybe, just maybe, feel like a fraction of my old self again! As I sat in the stylists chair, she immediately jumped into examining my hair with a furrowed brow, commenting on my dark roots, unhealthy ends, and problematic dandruff and dry sculpt. I tried to brush it off- I get it, I have zero time to myself anymore so my hair and appearance isn’t in tip top shape. As she continued to lecture me, she stated she needed to discuss if she could highlight my hair with management due to the presence of dandruff. She returned stating she would not do my hair- suggesting I consult a dermatologist (not an MD to be making this recommendation). On one hand I get it, thank you for looking out for my hair and sculpt health. On the other hand, where is your tact, empathy, and customer service?! Getting myself to that chair was a massive undertaking- pumping a bottle of milk, rearranging everyone’s morning routine, getting my partner to organize his work day to allow me to have a couple hours to myself, and overcoming the mom-guilt to get out the door and do something for myself. I didn’t think it was possible, but I left feeling absolutely worse about myself, calling a girlfriend in tears on the walk home. Perhaps if the stylist took a few minutes to build rapport with me instead of jumping right in and harshly critiquing my hair, she could have made a suggestion to “hey let’s do a wash and blow out instead” vs making me feel less than. This was by far my worst salon experience. I would not recommend Kara’s to anyone. I believe people should leave a salon feeling better about themselves- I’m my experience you won’t get it here!
