The growth in research activity at Saint Mary's is unprecedented, covering multiple topics and disciplines in the Social Sciences and Humanities, Natural Sciences and Engineering, and Occupational Health and Safety, as well as Finance and Management. It is home to the largest Faculties of Arts and Commerce in the Maritime Provinces, and our Faculty of Science is expanding rapidly. In these Faculties, the majority of the University's researchers, including post-doctoral fellows and research associates and some senior undergraduates, are located. They employ hundreds of graduate students, technical staff, scientists, professionals, and technicians on a huge variety of research topics. The University also takes pride in its wide range of fundamental and theoretical research. Nevertheless, Saint Mary's has various research activities that connect it with other communities (e.g. Government departments, ministries, private corporations, industry associations, citizen groups, associations, and international agencies). In January 2005, the FGSR established the Office of Innovation and Community Engagement (OICE). It was established to compliment and support research relations between faculty members and communities and to assist in the exchange of knowledge. OICE is the primary point of contact for faculty members and external parties to Saint Mary's University concerning developing research partnerships/collaborations/contracts, and the transfer of technology and knowledge that emerges from research at Saint Mary's.
