The Ontario Court of Justice is the primary court wherein charges are first appeared under the Criminal Code and Controlled Drugs and Substances Acts, Youth Criminal Justice Acts, and any other federal statutes. By creating approximately 60 criminal courts, the Ontario Court of Justice has diversified its services to meet the needs of Indigenous people and those with addiction or mental illness. The Ontario Court of Justice is committed to providing fair and timely access to justice. To achieve this goal, the Court of Justice has adopted new guidelines for criminal courts to form and schedule these courts effective January 2017. This ensures that the court resources are effectively managed. Therefore, it is necessary to have the approval of both the Chief Justice and the Regional Senior Justice.
