Sheridan Nurseries was established when the British landscape architects Howard Dunington-Grubb and Lorrie Dunington - Grubb migrated to Toronto in 1911. The duo had planned to introduce the English garden concept in Canada, but hardly any private garden existed in the country. Unfortunately, there was no Canadian nursery they could visit to buy required plants for their project. Hence, they had to start their gardens. They acquired land measuring 100 acres adjacent to Sheridan, a town in Ontario that is today part of Oakville. This piece of land was purchased to grow ornamental plants and at the same time test new species that were not yet well-researched. Howard and Lorrie were actively involved in their roles as landscape architects and they realized they needed someone competent to oversee the operations of Sheridan Nurseries so they could concentrate on designing. Thus, Lorrie posted an employment advert in London's Gardeners Chronicle, in November 1913, searching for a gardener. Herman Stensson, a skilled Scandinavian horticulturalist, made an application for the advertised post. Stensson's family came to Canada in the spring of 1914 and he started the nursery (Sheridan Nurseries | About Us, n.d.).
