Hi, I'm Martine, and I could ramble on about my accomplishments as a lady artist and photographer. But that's a terrible way for you to know me. What makes me me? And what's it like to be a creative genius locked in a brain that wants you to die? How does that inform my artistic vision, and how does my work make me feel? Photography saved my life, in a manner of speaking. At 20, I was a single mother and deeply depressed. After a decade of living under the poverty line, I was on welfare with no other option. Then, my second child was born, and I was sitting outside the food bank in cold Saskatchewan at forty below. It was so freezing, and my couch became a scraper as I tried to make money to get enough change to buy a milk jug. I had to decide if I wanted to change or keep going to this. I bought a G.E.D. book from a used bookstore and got my G.E.D. I also bought a digital camera because I always liked photographing pets. I remember the first time we took pictures together as a family, and it was an instant obsession. I posted a Kijiji ad for a fifteen-dollar photo session, and that was the only day it felt like work. People loved my photos, and they told their friends, so I booked more gigs. I shot thirty-six weddings that first year. The proudest moment and simultaneously the scariest was the day I wasn't poor anymore. I got a call from my social worker, saying, "You are doing so well. I will take you off of welfare."
