Alabama Ballet, the state's top professional ballet company, was launched in 1981. The Alabama Ballet School, the official school of Alabama Ballet, was established in 1985 and is today among the premier dance academies in the nation. The Alabama Ballet’s mission is to change lives through dance by promoting and fostering the creation of classical and contemporary ballet through high-quality performances, dance education, and community engagement. Alabama Ballet has achieved national recognition as the sole ballet company in the United States allowed the right to present George Balanchine's The Nutcracker (r) by the Balanchine Trust. CityDance, a 16-week dance program for youngsters from Birmingham and Jefferson County without previous dance training, is part of the Alabama Ballet's extensive outreach initiatives. Alabama Ballet, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is dedicated to providing the highest-quality dance to Alabama's and beyond. The Alabama Ballet School, which is located in Birmingham, AL, offers dance instruction that is developmentally and artistically ideal for aspiring artists of all ages and ability levels. The Alabama Ballet School uses the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus, which is based in London. Ruben Fuentes serves as the Alabama Ballet's Artistic Director, while W. Terrell Rollins is the company's Executive Director.
