Bio: Stephen Smith Fine Art Stephen Smith is an artist and owner of Stephen Smith Fine Art. He has worked in almost every form of visual arts, a journey that began professionally as an artist, cartoonist, writer, and journalist for independent newspapers in Alabama. After studying at UAB and Ringling in Florida, Stephen earned a BFA from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, following an insistence and submission of a single slide for a scholarship that he eventually received. His tenure at UArts was marked by controversy as he served as the Editor-in-Chief of the student paper. The most controversial issue led to the school confiscating the magazine, but the university later sent him to New York for independent study credits. After moving to New Orleans, he published his art journal isms and worked in local galleries, including selling work on Jackson Square. During this time, Stephen launched The Stephen Smith Press, a publishing house that produced comics and literary works alongside his art journal. The firm offered illustration, art direction, and cartoons for commercial and publication projects. Vision of Art: Engagement and Excellence Stephen believes that high-quality art can also be engaging. His goal in the gallery is to feature works that are thought-provoking, technically proficient, or just fun. The Stephen Smith Fine Art Gallery is located in an old silent film theater in downtown Fairfield, ten minutes from the Birmingham Museum of Art and built over a century ago. The gallery's goal is to develop a culture of art exploration and appreciation. It also supports art initiatives for public works in the Greater Birmingham Area.
