UAB Dermatology

At UAB Medicine Dermatology, we have one of the best programs in the country that treats complex skin diseases. We are one of the six Skin Diseases Research Centers designated and funded by the National Institutes of Health. The Southeast is privileged to have this comprehensive interdisciplinary centre for investigative dermatology. We handle thousands of skin cancer cases every year alongside UAB's O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center. These cases include melanoma and high-risk basal cells and squamous cell carcinomas and rarer tumors (UAB Medicine Dermatology, 2021). The other skin cancer treatment technique is Mohs Micrographic Surgery, which involves the removal of cancers from the skin. This treatment option is especially helpful as it reduces the chances of skin growth (UAB Medicine Dermatology, 2021). This surgery aims to preserve the healthy skin while removing the cancerous cells. Other treatment options available at UAB are related to hair removal using laser technology. Laser treatment is used to remove pigmented and vascular lesions, tattoos, and vascular lesions (UAB Medicine Dermatology, 2021). The full spectrum of UV light sources is available for skin treatment (UAB Medicine Dermatology, 2021). Patch testing can be done, which involves the application of patches on the skin to determine the cause of the allergy (UAB Medicine Dermatology, 2021). In addition to diagnosis and treatment, we also provide cosmetic dermatology services. At UAB, we offer these services to reduce wrinkles and scars on the skin. The services range from tumescent liposculpture (tumescent liposculpture) to sclerotherapy, ambulatory Phlebectomy, and Botox or other dermal fillers (UAB Medicine Dermatology, 2021). We conduct clinical trials, enabling us to offer treatments not available at other medical facilities.
