The new School of Concrete and Construction Management (SCCM) building is a 54,000 sq. feet, two-story structure. It is intended for use by the School of Concrete and Construction Management department and the general student population. The two-story building houses a one-story barre that runs east to west. Two of the most important outdoor elements, the courtyard and working yard, are separated by a one-story section running south. The lab spaces are west-facing on the initial ground floor. The department office, conference centre, and a class for the multimedia showcase are located in the east. The second floor includes a distributed mix of classrooms, computer labs, individual faculty offices, graduate/tutor centre, and collaborative and gathering areas. A one-story barre runs south and includes lab spaces, a covered amphitheater, a lecture hall, and a 200-seat seating room. The southern section of the building will be added to another building or the second floor. The two bars meet at the intersection of a common lobby, service core, and connecting staircase. The building will also feature an array of different learning spaces that may be used outside. The working yard on the west side of the building will provide a place for students to extend their projects and work outside their classrooms and laboratories. The covered amphitheater is directly linked to the student's projects lab and work yard. From this area, students will be able to observe construction techniques and product demonstrations (Orcutt | Winslow). The courtyard is currently being designed to offer an additional entrance to the building, as well as to function as a space to support department offices, industry and community events. The courtyard features concrete walkways that should be installed to showcase various techniques and decorative finishes.
