Raices, which means roots and Taller 222 Art, is the fusion of two different but complementary drives that brought Raices Taller into being 23 years ago. Juan Enriquez, Jorge Arteaga, and Jorge Arteaga came up with the idea of the art studio as a space where they could work. This studio is located at 222 E. 6th St., Tucson, in the same building as an art gallery. It was here that the ad-hoc group of Raices came to life, combining the financial, artistic, and organizational talents of its members. Initially, Raices had 23 members, and today, we have 12 members. Most of its members were acquainted with each other from either their school or their arts background. Raices Taller 222 Art is an initiative that hinges on the founding members' trust and mutual respect. The organization intends to cultivate mutual assistance by supporting each other. Raices Taller's utmost objective is to reach out to those who are cut off from the arts via the conventional network and educate them through arts. Raices Taller's main objective is to reach those excluded from art by using conventional ‘white walls’ institutions and denying them access to education. Our main goal is to use art to reach out to the communities who are disadvantaged and have no access to art. Raices Taller aspires to grow on its Latino root. However, this does not imply it has only the Latinos. This makes it more powerful and inspiring. The organization is characterized by its diverse art, which is a reflection of its members. Raices Taller is diverse and does not endorse any specific art; we have member artists of all ages, ranging from 6 to 80. The organization is committed to procuring a physical facility for members where they could combine their skills, share resources, and promote outreach. Raices Taller is a growing organization that looks for opportunities and places where it’s members can showcase their abilities in exposing art to the broader community, specifically children and adults. It has been able to provide access to all present and upcoming artist.
