Steven Derks is a practicing full-time Self-taught artist focusing primarily on metal sculpture with an emphasis on as-is-found object art, and a minor practice in non-objective painting and photography. His work can be found in numerous public, corporate, museum, and private art collections both in the United States and abroad. A six-year exhibition at the White House during Clinton's tenure. There is also an ongoing exhibit at the University of Arizona Bio 2 (Oracle Az). Steven Derks' art is best described as a combination of emotion and art, with bits and pieces of a machine world. He is best known for his sculpture out of scrapped machine parts. It becomes furniture. I now sit on chairs at a table made entirely from machine components. The sculptures I see are made of found items, such as a bronzed candle and a cup. All of this is charming and makes me smile. His ability to use color and form with ravished objects is a delight. His sculptures of hearts and guns are examples of art that can move us to darker feelings. His ability to transform industrial trash into beautiful furniture or gun-strapped hearts can make you laugh. This is how I relate to his work. His invitation was a great opportunity for me to make art. I also enjoyed his welding talents, which allowed us to turn mechanical leftovers into two guys.
