Mell, born in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1942, attended Phoenix College and the Art Center College of Design, Los Angeles, California. The artist left his job as a commercial advertiser in New York City after five years and returned to Phoenix to fulfill a long-held wish to paint the great American West.
