Norton Factory Studios is the result of Bernard W. Norton's efforts to create a custom tool shop in Oakland, California, in 1901. The company became a leading manufacturer in California, specializing in auto parts, steel containers, and license plates. Over the next 100 years, the Norton family influenced Oakland and the greater California communities, much like what Mr. Norton did for himself, his family, and two generations of employees. The 10th Street Norton factory was almost empty and unused in the 1990s when Norton had to move out and expand. Four Norton Factory buildings were purchased by a local designer/manufacturer by the end of 2009 with the aim of bringing the factory its former life. Over a few years, the buildings were renovated and transformed, and these structures' rich and unique history was restored, showcasing and preserving the neighborhood's manufacturing and art culture. Norton Factory Studios was born of these efforts. Norton Factory Studios - Our Studios Norton Factory Studios provides 18 newly constructed and specialized studio spaces featuring operable windows that offer the appropriate East/West lighting for best viewing of fine art. While each studio differs in size and design, what they have in common is a pristine environment for artists to explore and grow. A big interior courtyard shared by all studios is ideal for hosting events, art exhibits, and daily interaction among the tenants. A classroom is also available for the community's enrichment.
