Welcome to Delancey Street¿s website, the largest self-help organization in the US. It assists addicts, ex-convicts, and the homeless. The residents are 16-year-old addicts who have been using many drugs for sixteen years. They dropped out of school in7th grade. Many have been institutionalized many times, belonged to gangs, and the fourth generation to live in poverty. We declined professionals to help the residents with their problems. Delancey Street was conducted without staff or funding. They will learn to help each other and develop their talents like a big family (Wexler, 1998). This is a way to change lives ¿against all odds.¿ Our strategy was to instruct ex-convicts, ex-addicts on the way to become teachers, truck drivers, and general contractors. They said it was impossible. We planned to employ 250 individuals with no job experience and teach them to build a complex of 400,000 sq feet as our waterfront home. They said it was impossible. We declared that we will collaborate with universities to help the functionally illiterate achieve bachelor¿s degrees. They said it was impossible. We planned to run successful cafes, restaurants, furniture factories, bookshops, and moving companies without professionals. They said it was impossible. We declared that we would perform those things with no staff, government funding or professional help. They said it could not be done. Such is our struggle, which we have been doing for the last four decades. We have been creating a social enterprise model that has offered education, rehabilitation, and change for over forty years.
