One of the basic commands you can teach your dog is "sit." Your dog is encouraged to settle down with this teach and learns how to ask for what it needs. It is the same with children who are taught to say "please." Sit can be seen as a way for your dog to ask, “Please pet me,” “Please feed me,” “Please open the door,” or “Please throw my ball.” You should not let your dog think that you will give it to him when he is whining, jumping, barking, or swatting you with his paw. A dog needs to be told what to do as well as what NOT to do. You do not want your dog to jump on the guests. In what way do you want him to respond otherwise? You want him to sit so that it can be petted? Let me do that! Your dog should learn that sitting might help it get what it wants, it is a good starting point to encourage good behavior.
