At HDC, we offer adult drop-in classes in many styles, including ballet, contemporary, jazz, and hip-hop. Our rehearsal/event venue is in the heart of downtown Hartford, and we have repertory shows and host guest performers. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dance presentation and a producing organization. All our classes and performances are open to everyone, and our venue is available to all genders, sexualities, abilities, races, cultures, backgrounds, economic statuses, and identities. Our organization is dedicated to promoting diversity and multiple perspectives in the arts, and we rely heavily on community involvement to achieve this. We started The Collective to focus on getting more opportunities for women choreographers and dancers in a male-dominated field. However, gender does not fit into a binary and can be fluid and even indefinable for some. Here and going forward, when we say "woman" or "women," we are referring to anyone connected to or relating to being a female. Many women have more privilege than others. We recognize that trans women and women who identify as women of color are underrepresented in our field and have fewer opportunities than other women. We are committed to representing all women. This is a vast topic, and we plan to work on it together with the community of artists. Our organization is working to improve representation among all groups, including audiences, performers, students, staff, and board members.
