Hartford Dance Collective is dedicated to inclusion, regardless of gender, sexuality, or ability. It also includes people from all races, cultures, backgrounds, economic statuses, identities, etc. Our commitment is to create an environment that encourages diversity, multiple perspectives, and greater engagement of the community in the arts. We started The Collective with the goal - which still remains - of advocating for women choreographers, and dancers, and giving them more opportunities in a male-dominated field. We believe that gender can be fluid and, for some, even indefinable. We use the term "woman" to refer to anyone that is connected or relates in any way with being a female. Some women have more privileges than others. We are aware that trans women and women who identify as women of color may be underrepresented, and have fewer opportunities than other women. It is important to us to represent ALL women. This issue is a huge one and we would like to make a difference in the community of arts. HDC is working to improve the representation of all groups, including audiences, performers, students, staff, and board members.

The Hartt School Community Division, the Hartt School's community extension, provides a stimulating learning environment for aspiring artists, from preschool to adulthood. Our commitment is to develop the artist as a whole through instruction, collaborations, performances, outreach, and creative exploration. HCD has been accredited by both the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD). Welcome to the HCD community. It is the goal of this program to lay a strong foundation for future college studies or careers in dance. All students are welcome to take supplementary classes offered by the Youth Program. These divisions are important milestones in the curriculum, similar to elementary, middle, and high schools. Our goal is to help all students achieve the highest level of achievement and mastery. We make every effort to place the student at the appropriate level. Students progress through the program at their pace.
