Philips Garden Store was founded in 1961 by Kelley Philips Jr. and was initially located on South Edgewood Ave. The nursery served Murray Hill for more than two decades. As the nursery became increasingly popular, it was obvious that a bigger location was required, so in 1982, Warner's Nursery was established at 4234 Herschel Street. Kelley Phillips bought the property, and it started as a full-service hardware & plant nursery. Joel Philips and Kelley made the property a family business when they retired in 1993. The nursery grew and changed as the neighborhood evolved. The store has been fortunate to grow along with the surrounding neighborhoods, such as Murray Hill, Riverside and Woodmere, and Fairfax. Some changes have happened over the years; hardware is now replaced with outdoor furniture & garden decor. Pergolas & trees add shade and appeal to the garden, while green products have been added. However, it is known for high-quality products and customer service. Whatever the changes, the store remains the same: independent, family-owned, and more than 50 years old. Many customers still come to Philips Garden Store because they remember us from their childhood. Now, their grandkids also buy from us.

The garden store receives mostly positive feedback. The many visitors like the helpful staff and the wide range of colorful plants. Customers note competitive pricing and the friendly, relaxed atmosphere of the store and the beautiful selection of plants. Several buyers identify the human touch of the store as a big plus, such as carry-out service to their vehicle or helping with questions. Fewer comments expressed negative feedback about the scope of the succulent collection and said that the plant area was separated, which was not beneficial. All of this shows a broad and positive spread of customer satisfaction with the location. Many reviewers are likely to return. Many say they want to return due to the store's large variety of outside plants, and others enjoy the indoor garden area. Most say the environment is beautiful, and everyone was helpful, which they appreciate. Some are children and unsuccessful plants, while others find something they want to buy. Suggestions put forward by the customers include better and more accessible plant identification technologies for both indoor and outdoor plants.
