The Department of Medicine, founded in 1952, was one of the nation's first combined training programs for specialists and primary care physicians. The department comprises approximately 330 faculty members who are specialists in their fields and nationally and internationally respected. The team of physicians, researchers, and healthcare providers is committed to delivering a wide range of medical services at numerous UM facilities. A key to the department's success has been the close collaboration and inter-professional exchange between the different specialties in the Department, as well as within the Medical School of the University. Dr. Daniel Shapiro, on Pediatrics, for example, studies the etiology and protection of HIV infection in infants. Dr. Faisal Kazi, on Medicine/Cardiology, leads a team whose work has resulted in the development of a novel diagnostic tool. Students will also be exposed to the latest methods and findings from patients they see in the classroom or the clinic. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and industry supported these efforts. The chairs of the Department’s 20 sections are nationally recognized leaders in their respective fields. They are responsible for advising the Chief Medical Officer and for coordinating the Department’s clinical activities. The scientific, research, and instructional leadership is shared by these section chairpersons. Also, the Department has administrative sections that are staffed by over 975 Faculty, including administrative, research and clinical, clerical, and information system support.
