Aupuni Space, an artist-run institution based in Honolulu, aims to maintain a cultural space in the Kakaako district that houses the most substantial approach to community-based programming and exhibitions related to KanakaʻOiwi, Hawaii artists, and their international collaborators. Only at Aupuni Space can these groups see a contemporary global view of Hawaii, engage with it, and find a space for their voices. Aupuni started with the Aupuni Artwall at the corner of Aupuni and School Streets, where Native Books Hawaii had operated. Aupuni Place was on the ʻewa side of Ward Warehouse and housed an art gallery and studio space. The Aupuni ʻohana moved to Auahi Street in 2017 and launched the 729 Studios on the old SPF Projects site. Aupuni Space has been located within it since February 2018. Aupuni's programs are part of the Puuhonua Society. We also collaborate with the TRADES Artist-in-Residence program and Tropic Editions. Our programs are made possible by the generous donations from the Atherton Family Foundation and the Hawaii State Foundation for Culture and the Arts, the Mayor's Office of Culture and the Arts, the New Art Dealers Alliance, and WESTAF, along with many individual supporters in our community. If you would like to help support the space, please consider making a donation through PayPal.
