About this business
Jim Franklin founded Sunshine Arts in 1996. It started as a small mat-cutting firm in his apartment at Waikiki. He launched the company using a $100 loan and $20 for the last fund. He began by visiting the artists in the Waikiki area, where he promised them that he could cut their mats for a small fee. He also reached out to photographers and secured a few clients. Jim landed a matting contract in the Windward area of Oahu a year toward the commencement of his business. Although the building was in bad shape, the rent was cheap, so he took the offer. Sunshine Arts was the only road running along the coast of Oahu. After years of making frames and mats for the community, there were hundreds of these pieces left, and the gallery was full. When the word spread, artists from other islands came to send their works to Jim and his sales manager Laetitia Atlantis. Sunshine Arts have the most comprehensive collection of Hawaiian art. Over 100 artists are involved, and you get to choose from several mat colors and moldings for your picture frame. The suppliers can make your frame in a few hours.
