Urban Works, Inc. was established in 1984 by three young architects from Kakaako who sought to establish a practice that was prioritized by the needs and goals of the client. The firm's depth and size allow it to produce award-winning projects based on the firm’s years of experience. The firm continues to draw inspiration from the urban, industrial, and everyday spheres of life. The firm is firmly planted in Hawaii’s rich history and possesses a deep understanding of the essential importance of location. Urban Works has built its reputation on expertise situated in an urban context, but the firm also works with natural environments that are equally important. John Ida continues to work with founding partners Lorrin and Lorrin Matsunaga to create a diverse portfolio that reflects Hawaii’s unique culture. The three founding partners are still the principal forces behind the modern Urban Works, and they work together to promote innovation and bring people together in meaningful ways.
