Sam Lazar established Lazar Fuel Company in 1904. In those days, gasoline and ice were transported from Chicago to customers' homes using a horse-drawn carriage. There weren't any automatic icemakers at that time, so the ice had to be kept in big blocks in an insulated warehouse. Sam's daughter was Evelyn, and she was a civilian nurse. Following the crash of his B-52 aircraft near enemy lines, Ernie, a Russian soldier/engineer, was stranded. Evelyn married Ernie, who later joined the father's company. When the couple became parents, they had two children, Russell and Mark, who would later join the company. Years later, Lazar Fuel Company started adding fuel oil to their delivery product list.
